Athletic Bilbao midfielder Iker Muniain insists they can beat Real Madrid in tonight’s Supercopa de Espana final.
Athletic are current Copa holders.
“It’s always difficult against Real Madrid because they have decisive players and lots of quality throughout their squad,” Muniain said.
“But we won this trophy last year and we want to make the most of this new opportunity. Athletic haven’t played Real Madrid in a final for a long time and we’re really looking forward to it. What we want is to lift the Supercopa again.”
Real Madrid have won the Supercopa 11 times, most recently in 2019/20, and they currently lead the LaLiga Santander table, but Muniain stressed that Athletic will also pose a threat on Sunday night.
“In terms of desire, will and ambition it could be said that we’re better,” the captain said.
“In December we faced each other twice almost back to back. We stood up to them and played well. We could have won both matches.
“In a one-off game, anything can happen.”
Ahead of such an important day, the skipper sent a message to Athletic fans all around the world, saying: “Obviously, this is an important day. It’s a big match and there’s silverware at stake.
“For the players, the club and the supporters it’s an exciting day. I know all our fans will be paying close attention to the match.
“We’ll do everything possible to make sure they can be proud of us.”
