Newcastle signing Wood never imagined release clause being triggered

Newcastle United striker Chris Wood was certain no team would activate his £25 million release clause at Burnley.

The veteran centre-forward, who has endured a mixed season so far, was quickly signed by the Magpies after they learned of the clause in his contract.

The New Zealand forward admitted he was happy at Burnley, but felt he had to make the move after his clause was triggered.

“I knew the clause was sitting there but I don’t think anyone ever thought it would ever be triggered,” said the 30-year-old, per The Guardian.

“But that’s the way football can be sometimes … You never know, in six months’ time you might look back and say: ‘That was a great deal.'”
